Officer Ethan Derr ascends to sergeant in Newark PD; brings military leadership to role

The Newark Police Department (NPD) recently promoted Officer Ethan Derr to the rank of Police Sergeant, effective September 18.

A Newark High School graduate, Derr served four years in the US Marine Corps, earning the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal for Leadership. He gained experiences as an infantryman and a squad leader with the Marine Corp Honor Guard before transitioning to law enforcement.

After starting his law enforcement journey with the Wayne County Sheriffโ€™s Office in 2018, he joined the NPD in January 2020, demonstrating consistent leadership skills and ethical standards throughout his tenure.

Mayor Taylor and Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett lauded Sergeant Derrโ€™s rapid advancement and substantial contributions to the department, recognizing his integrity, compassion, and collaborative spirit. They expressed confidence in his ability to be a pivotal figure in the departmentโ€™s ongoing development and evolution. Sergeant Derr, a devoted family man, will officially be sworn in at the Newark Village Board meeting on September 25.
