The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is set to lead a two-mile paddling excursion on Nine Mile Creek and the recently restored wetlands of Onondaga Lake on Thursday, August 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Participants will have an opportunity to explore the lake’s diverse bird population, including Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Great Blue Herons, and learn about the importance of the lake as a migratory stopover. Experts from Montezuma Audubon Center and Parsons will join the trip to discuss the enhanced wetlands’ role in supporting the Onondaga Lake watershed. The event, launching from Honeywell Canoe and Kayak Launch in Syracuse, NY, will include kayak rentals on a first-come, first-served basis and will take place rain or shine.
Founded in 2012, the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is a volunteer organization contributing to restoration projects that create and improve wildlife habitat within the watershed. The Corps was created in collaboration with Honeywell, Montezuma Audubon Center, Onondaga Audubon, and is now an Audubon New York program, with additional support from various community foundations.
