Ontario County in New York State is taking a significant step towards environmental sustainability by launching a pilot program aimed at recycling used building materials.
The Finger Lakes Times reports the Board of Supervisorsโ Planning & Environmental Quality Committee has approved a contract with Finger Lakes ReUse of Ithaca to implement this initiative.
This decision comes in response to a proposal from the town of Geneva, which initially requested a $5,000 grant for a local pilot program.
However, the scope of the project was expanded to a countywide level after a presentation by Carla Jordan, the countyโs director of Sustainability and Solid Waste Management, leading to the unanimous approval of an $86,040 allocation for the program.
The program, designed to reduce landfill waste, will focus on repurposing construction materials like old doors and windows, often discarded during home remodels.
