Ontario County officials urge state to come up with housing plan for asylum seekers

Ontario County officials are urging the New York State government to devise a housing plan amidst the recent surge of migrants and asylum seekers.

Todd Campbell, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, voiced concerns regarding the lack of a relocation plan for asylum seekers from New York City to Ontario County, highlighting the existing housing shortage within the county. Campbell warned that an influx of asylum seekers could further strain the county’s already limited housing resources and impact the Department of Social Services.

This plea comes as several New York State counties, including Orleans, Genesee, and Steuben, have declared states of emergency due to housing concerns.

A resolution forwarded to the Board of Supervisors is seeking detailed housing plans from state and New York City officials if asylum seekers are to be settled in Ontario County. Meanwhile, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has issued an emergency order prohibiting hotels and shelters from contracting to provide emergency shelter without approval, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive housing strategy. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to discuss this issue further in their meeting on Thursday, June 1.
