Junior forward Kyle Penney recorded two assists, and junior goaltender Ian Shane made 17 saves to aid the No. 13-ranked Cornell men’s hockey team to a 2-0 shutout over Harvard at Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Friday night.
Shane’s shutout was the 10th of his collegiate career, tying Wisconsin’s Kyle McLellan and Notre Dame’s Ryan Bischel for the third-most by all active Division I goaltenders. The shutout also tied Shane with Laing Kennedy ’63 for the seventh-most in Cornell history.
Junior forward Jack O’Leary and junior defenseman Tim Rego scored first-period tallies for Cornell (11-4-3, 6-4-1 ECAC), extending its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).
Harvard goaltender Derek Mullahy concluded the night with 21 saves between the pipes for the Crimson (3-12-3, 3-7-3 ECAC).
Cornell dominated the opening 20 minutes of play, outshooting the Crimson by a 12-1 total.
The Big Red’s first tally came from a Harvard turnover deep in its defensive zone, which Penney was able to corral the loose puck and set up O’Leary’s wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Mullahy to his blocker side.
Late in the period, Rego increased the lead for the Big Red as an aggressive Cornell forecheck enabled DeSantis to feed the junior defenseman the puck, and his shot was able to beat Mullahy to his short side as he frantically tried to make a desperation cross-crease save.
Neither team could find the back of the net over the remaining 40 minutes despite many scoring chances for both sides. Harvard outshot Cornell, 16-11, for the remainder of the contest, including an 8-2 mark in the final period.
Cornell went 0-for-3 on the power play, two of which came in the first period. Harvard, which entered the night with the third-best power play in the country, was held in check on its pair of opportunities.
