Police search in Newfield linked to missing Ithaca man

Multiple agencies were seen investigating in Newfield on Friday. It was apparently tied to the missing person’s investigation that was announced last week in Ithaca.

Beginning early-Friday, a portion of Benjamin Road has been cordoned off as authorities conducted a grid search in a nearby wooded area, complemented by a New York State Police helicopter flying low for aerial inspection.

The investigation revolves around 33-year-old Thomas Rath, last seen around May 17 in an area of Ithaca known as “The Jungle,” a wooded area behind Lowe’s used as a homeless encampment.

Despite a thorough search of “The Jungle” on May 27, no traces of Rath were found.

Described as a white male, six feet tall, weighing approximately 145 pounds, Rath has several distinctive tattoos, including a black and pink heart on his neck. The search operations are being supported by New York State Police, the Newfield Fire Department, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State forest rangers.
