Sabres blank Islanders for third straight win, sit three points out of playoff spot

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen earned his fifth shutout of the season as the Buffalo Sabres blanked the New York Islanders, 4-0, at KeyBank Center on Thursday night.

With the victory, Buffalo (32-30-5) moved within three points of the Islanders and Detroit Red Wings for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Zach Benson scored twice, one of which was an empty-netter to seal the win, while Victor Olofsson and Dylan Cozens also found the back of the net. Owen Power tallied two assists.

Buffalo went a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and 1-for-4 on the power play.

The Sabres will try to inch closer to a playoff spot on Saturday when they visit the Detroit Red Wings at 12:30 p.m.
