The Buffalo Sabres desperately needed two points against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night but a third-period collapse cost them an 8-3 loss, pushing them seven points behind the Detroit Red Wings for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference with 11 games left in the regular season.
Buffalo (33-33-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and held a 3-2 lead late in the second, but Edmonton (42-24-4) scored six unanswered goals, including five in the final 20 minutes to notch the win.
JJ Peterka scored twice for the Sabres, while Alex Tuch and Tage Thomspon tallied assists to extend their point streaks to four games. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen turned in his worst performance of the season, allowing all eight goals, but did not get much help in front of him.
Buffalo went 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The Sabres will close out a five-game road trip on Sunday when they visit the Calgary Flames at 9 p.m.
