Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have announced nearly $2 million in federal funding for workforce development in three Central New York counties: Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida.
The funding, allocated by the US Department of Labor, will facilitate the Workforce Development Board’s creation of a program designed to train workers in the Mohawk Valley in a variety of in-demand sectors, such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and semiconductor manufacturing.
The initiative is anticipated to instruct 300 individuals, particularly from marginalized and underrepresented communities, to help them secure high-quality employment opportunities and is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the Mohawk Valley’s manufacturing legacy and enhance economic growth.
The program will partner with local organizations and employers to offer compressed-time training for essential skills before technical training commences and aims to create employment pipelines connecting employers with a diverse range of prospective employees.
By aligning with community entities like the Midtown Utica Community Center, Mohawk Valley Latino Center, and the NAACP, the initiative seeks to enable underprivileged populations access to training necessary for securing lucrative employment, thereby contributing to regional economic stability and development.
