Sen. Gillibrand calls for Cornell professor who made controversial remarks about Hamas to be dismissed

State Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has called for the dismissal of a Cornell University professor after he made comments endorsing the terror group Hamas.

Gillibrand emphasized that New York classrooms should not harbor any form of hatred. โ€œAs a person of authority at an educational institution, celebrating murder, rape, and the harming of children, he should be fired,โ€ she told media on Wednesday.

The Cornell Daily Sun, a student-run newspaper, reported that history professor Russell Rickford described a Hamas terrorist attack as โ€œexhilaratingโ€ and โ€œenergizingโ€ during an off-campus rally. This statement has drawn sharp criticism from numerous lawmakers, including Gillibrand.

Responding to the controversy, Cornell University stated, โ€œThe comments show no regard for humanity and do not represent Cornellโ€™s values. We are taking this incident seriously and reviewing it according to our procedures.โ€
