The Seneca7, a 77.7-mile relay race around Seneca Lake, has hit its registration limit in just under seven hours for its 14th edition scheduled for April 28, 2024.
Over 2,000 runners, forming seven-member teams, signed up on October 31, signaling strong continued interest in the event. The 2024 race marks the 12th in-person running, following two virtual races in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
Race co-director Ian Golden, who recently took over ownership of Seneca7, highlighted the event’s popularity, with participants hailing from 13 states, including as far as Florida and Arizona. The enthusiasm for the race suggests a deep-seated affection for the annual relay, which has become a spring tradition for many runners.
The event is not just a race but a collector’s journey for many, as runners aim to acquire all seven unique medals, one for each leg of the relay over the years.
The enduring appeal of Seneca7 is evident with 17 teams having participated in every race to date, and new teams continue to join the tradition. Co-director Jeff Henderson expressed excitement about the race’s ability to retain long-term participants while simultaneously attracting new interest. The event, which will commence in downtown Geneva and circle the lake through scenic routes, will culminate with a celebration at Geneva’s Lakefront Park.
