The Batavia Police Department is now leading the investigation into the line-of-duty death of Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas A. Sanfratello, who passed away following an altercation at Batavia Downs on March 10. Sergeant Sanfratello, a 32-year veteran, was working a special detail at the casino when the incident occurred.
The conflict began inside the facility’s bar area and escalated as Sergeant Sanfratello and security staff attempted to escort two combative patrons, Michael J. Elmore and Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, from the premises. Despite efforts to control the situation, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in Sergeant Sanfratello becoming unresponsive. Life-saving measures were attempted, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the Genesee County Coroner.
The Batavia Police Department, in coordination with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies, urges witnesses or anyone with video of the incident to come forward as part of the ongoing investigation. The community mourns the loss of Sergeant Sanfratello, and officials extend their condolences to his family and colleagues during this difficult time.
