Court documents reveal that lawyers representing retired Syracuse University men’s basketball coach, Jim Boeheim, have reached a settlement in a lawsuit filed by the family of Jorge Jimenez, who died in a car accident on Interstate 690 in 2019. On March 24, Abigail Dean, the attorney for Jimenez’s family, submitted documents informing Judge Joseph Lamendola of the settlement agreement.
Both parties have agreed to keep the terms of the settlement confidential and requested the judge to seal the agreement. In an affidavit, Dean argued that the private resolution of the case is not of public concern, as the public is already aware of the lawsuit and the incident.
The accident occurred on February 21, 2019, when Jimenez exited his car on I-690 Eastbound after a crash and stood on the side of the road. Boeheim reportedly noticed the disabled car and attempted to avoid it but struck Jimenez in the process. Jimenez was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was later revealed that Boeheim was driving at 66 mph in a 55 mph zone.
On March 9, 2019, Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick released a report stating that Boeheim’s actions were not reckless, unreasonable, or grossly negligent, and no crimes were committed. However, in 2020, Jimenez’s family filed a lawsuit against Boeheim and Syracuse University, claiming that Boeheim’s actions were negligent and reckless due to speeding.
It remains unknown whether the judge has approved the settlement.
