Sheriff Thompson: Have a plan over holiday weekend

Sheriff Tim Thompson announced a heightened crackdown on impaired driving across Seneca County from March 15 to March 17, 2024, coinciding with St. Patrick’s Day festivities. This initiative is part of the statewide STOP-DWI “High Visibility Engagement Campaign,” aimed at curbing alcohol-related accidents and fatalities during one of the year’s most celebration-heavy weekends.

Local police departments, including the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, Interlaken, Seneca Falls, and Waterloo Police Departments, alongside New York State Police, will intensify enforcement to alert drivers to the dangers of driving while intoxicated. The campaign encourages celebrants to make responsible choices and arrange for sober transportation.

This enforcement surge is part of broader efforts by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, which also targets other major holidays known for increased impaired driving incidents. The campaign underscores the importance of planning ahead to ensure safe travel options, promoting the use of the “Have a Plan” mobile app to find sober rides home, thereby preventing impaired driving before it starts.
