State legislators aim to boost lithium-ion battery safety

Following numerous fires and fatalities linked to lithium-ion batteries in New York City, state legislators have taken action to enhance safety measures for these rechargeable power sources. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie highlighted the Assemblyโ€™s approval of five key bills on Wednesday, aimed at safeguarding residents from battery-induced fires, which have been on the rise statewide.

The proposed legislation focuses on establishing stricter safety standards for the sale of lithium-ion batteries and chargers, including mandatory safety information tags on chargers and advisories to disconnect devices when not in use. Assembly members Jeffery Dinowitz and Christopher Eachus are leading these efforts, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness and precaution in using these technologies.

In addition to direct product regulations, the legislative package proposes educational and emergency response initiatives, including a rebate program for battery replacement and specialized training for hazardous materials incidents. The Senate is now set to discuss these measures, reflecting New Yorkโ€™s commitment to addressing the dangers of lithium-ion batteries through both prevention and preparedness.
