New York State has significantly increased its budget to assist asylum seekers, with the current commitment growing from $1 billion in May to a whopping $1.8 billion, according to recent reports.
The surge primarily addresses the accommodation and care of the migrants, with New York City bearing a major portion of the expenses, totaling $4.7 million for the fiscal year commencing July 1.
The city presently shelters 65,000 migrants and has welcomed a total of 130,000 since their arrival began in spring 2022. Despite the city shouldering the majority, tensions have risen between city and state leadership regarding funding.
The state, originally expecting its annual share of shelter costs to be $700 million, now predicts it will surpass $1.1 billion.
This inflation is partly due to the state’s agreement to cover full expenses for two major relief centers that commenced operations in August.
