In a significant move, a faction of the Cayuga Nation opposed to the current tribal leadership has purchased a 23.1-acre parcel of land at 3136 Seybolt Road for $295,000.
The Finger Lakes Times reported the acquisition, which was finalized on December 5 from Jonathan Parish. It positions the Traditional Cayuga Nation within their historic 64,015-acre reservation territory, which spans Seneca and Cayuga counties. This territory was established under the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua.
During a recent meeting, Fayette Town Supervisor Jeff Trout inquired with Cayuga Sachem Sam George and other representatives about their intentions to comply with town and county regulations, including zoning, codes, land-use ordinances, and property tax requirements on the newly acquired land.
The response from the Cayuga representatives was affirmatively cooperative, according to officials. Trout then proposed a meeting with town officials to further discuss these matters, though as of Fayette’s last Town Board meeting, the discussion session had not yet been scheduled.
