Triphammer Marketplace faced a temporary evacuation of its shops and atrium areas on Wednesday afternoon, following a verbal altercation that escalated when one individual used pepper spray on another.
The individuals involved in the dispute were reportedly frequenting an onsite laundromat within the marketplace. The swift evacuation followed concerns over exposure to the spray, with one person nearby confirming minor respiratory issues as a consequence of the incident.
Sheriff Derek Osborne said that by the time law enforcement arrived at the scene, both individuals involved had already left.
The suspected pepper spray is believed to have been bear repellent. In response to the incident, the Lansing Fire Department was dispatched to the location to aid in ventilating the affected areas, and several businesses had to cease operations for the day due to contamination concerns.
The Tompkins County Sheriffโs Office is currently seeking information regarding the identities of the individuals involved in the altercation and has requested anyone with relevant information to contact them. Sheriff Osborne has not provided any descriptions of the individuals involved in the incident.
