The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced significant price increases for its shipping services, set to take effect on January 21, 2024. This decision, approved by the Postal Service governors, aims to adjust rates for services such as Priority Mail and Ground Advantage.
According to the USPS news release, the upcoming changes will not affect USPS Connect Local, a service offering local same-day and next-day delivery to businesses. The release also highlighted the USPS’s commitment to providing value in shipping, emphasizing its policy of no additional surcharges for residential delivery, regular Saturday delivery, or fuel. This contrasts with practices commonly seen in other shipping companies.
The specific rate increases include a 5.4% hike for USPS Ground Advantage, 5.7% for Priority Mail service, and 5.9% for Priority Mail Express service. Under the new pricing, a Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope will cost $30.45, subject to approval. Prices for Ground Advantage will vary depending on the origin and destination within the country. Additionally, the USPS is contemplating adjustments in the pricing of post office box rentals, international mail services, and other special service products, currently under review by the Postal Regulatory Commission.
The current prices for USPS shipping services that will be affected by these increases include Ground Advantage starting from $4.75, Priority Mail Express from $28.75, and various Priority Mail options ranging from $9.35 to $10.20, all with varying delivery times from one to five business days. The planned rate increase reflects the USPS’s ongoing efforts to balance operational costs while maintaining effective and reliable service amidst evolving market conditions.
