David Jakubonis, the man who pleaded guilty to attacking former Rep. Lee Zeldin in 2022, was sentenced to three years of probation in federal court on Thursday. The incident occurred in Perinton while Zeldin was campaigning for governor, with Jakubonis admitting he was intoxicated at the time.
Following his arrest, Jakubonis entered an alcohol treatment program and has since received ongoing support for his addiction from the Veterans Outreach Center. He was initially charged with assaulting a federal officer, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Jakubonis’ attorney, John DeMarco, described his client as appreciative and optimistic about his future as a sober individual. DeMarco also noted that Zeldin, himself a veteran, was understanding of Jakubonis’ situation and supportive of the help he received. Zeldin, in a statement, acknowledged Jakubonis’ personal improvements through the resources provided by the Monroe County VA and local veterans organizations, expressing hope for his continued progress and use of mental health and support resources.
