The Waterloo Central School District Board of Education has unanimously appointed Robert Banzer as the interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year. This decision, made by a 7-0 vote on December 27, sees Banzer taking the leadership role until June 30.
Banzer, who recently retired on December 31 after an eight-year tenure as superintendent of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District in Suffolk County, Long Island, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Prior to his time in Long Island, he spent 11 years as a classroom teacher in Maryland and the Brockport school district, teaching American history and economics.
His career also includes administrative roles as a middle school principal, assistant high school principal in Brockport, director of Human Resources in the Wayne Central School District, and assistant superintendent for instruction in Brockport.
The Waterloo School Board is currently conducting a formal search for a permanent superintendent, led by Mike Ford, president and CEO of School Leader Search of Palmyra. The goal is to have a permanent superintendent in place by July 1, 2024.
The appointment follows the retirement of Terri Bavis, who had been the superintendent since 2016. Mike Midey of Seneca Falls served as the acting superintendent until December 31.
