Wayne Central bus involved in fatal wreck with sedan

A fatal crash involving a Wayne Central school bus and a sedan resulted in one death and two injuries on Wednesday afternoon, at the intersection of Lake Road and State Route 250.

The devastating crash, occurring around 1:15 p.m., saw the bus engulfed in flames upon impact. The bus, returning from a field trip was transporting 22 students and three adults at the time of the incident, according to officials.

The driver of the sedan was declared dead at the scene, with police investigations underway to determine whether the death resulted from crash injuries or a prior medical episode.

Meanwhile, an adult and a student from the bus were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Steve Gallaher, the president of the Wayne Central Board of Education, who is also a volunteer fireman, responded to the crash, noting the severe fire damage to the bus upon his arrival.

The district expressed its gratitude towards local emergency responders for their swift and exceptional handling of the situation and care for the students and staff involved.

Subsequent to the crash, parents were able to reunite with their children at the nearby Webster Park, providing solace amidst the tragic circumstances. The district continues to cooperate with authorities in their ongoing investigations into the cause of this heartbreaking incident.
