The Humane Society of Wayne County has embarked on the “Raise the Woof” capital campaign to fund a new, modern shelter. The current facility, retrofitted from a residential building in 1990, is inadequate for today’s animal care standards. With New York’s new Animal Shelter Standards Law looming, HSWC faces the necessity of a new building to meet these regulations and better serve the community’s stray, lost, and surrendered animals.
The proposed 9,800-square-foot facility will significantly enhance HSWC’s operations. It will include increased capacity for dogs and cats, private adoption rooms, and improved amenities like a covered exercise area. The design also considers future expansions. The new shelter, unlike the current structure, will meet modern standards for animal care, including adequate space for quarantine, intake, and meet and greet areas.
HSWC, reliant solely on donations and grants, has raised $598,300 towards the $2.5 million goal. The campaign offers various donation options, from cat condos at $500 to larger naming rights for different shelter wings. Community involvement is crucial for reaching the target, ensuring HSWC continues to provide essential services to Wayne County’s animals without resorting to euthanasia for space.
