A Webster woman, Alicia Torres, has been handed a one-year prison sentence following her guilty plea to wire fraud, after stealing nearly $578,000 from her employer Wegmans.
The 48-year-old former employee orchestrated an extensive scheme involving 350 fraudulent credit card refund requests over several years, as stated by prosecutors.
From 2014 to February of the current year, Torres exploited her long-term position at Wegmans to process refunds in the names of customers for fictitious amounts, which she had observed from previous legitimate transactions.
She deceived pharmacists into authorizing these refunds, subsequently transferring the funds to herself using her own debit card, culminating in the theft of $568,021.69.
In addition to the substantial credit card fraud, Torres was involved in a separate theft where she misappropriated $10,922 through fraudulent use of gift cards. As part of her sentencing, Torres is obligated to pay full restitution of $578,943.86 to Wegmans for the funds she illicitly acquired.
