How should the Seneca County Board of Supervisors proceed with the Cayuga Nation?
A joint press release issued by the two parties last week indicated that the sides were looking toward a future without litigation. “In a significant development in the relationship with Seneca County and the Cayuga Nation, a new era of cooperation and mutual respect is being recognized,” the release read.
Seneca County officials quickly noted that it wasn’t a formal agreement setting anything specific into motion. Rather, it was viewed as an agreement for the two sides to start talking.
At it’s December board meeting this week, the supervisors heard from a number of local residents who wanted to see the announcement retracted, or at least clarified.
Among those who spoke out against the announcement at the meeting were Interlaken Village Board member Tony Del Plato, Fayette resident Charles Bowman, Former Fayette Town Supervisor Cindy Lorenzetti, and even Seneca County Republican Party Chairman Tom Fox. There were also Cayuga Nation members who showed up to speak out against Clint Halftown’s leadership, which has been subject to an internal dispute for years.
Board Chairman Michael Enslow told Finger Lakes News Radio this week that a meeting was held with Halftown, who is the federally recognized leader of the Nation. He told them that the conversation was essentially a ‘starter’ to see where the two sides could go down the road.
No additional action was taken by the board on the matter.
