For just the fifth time in franchise history, the New York Yankees have won their first four series of the season.
The Yankees (8-4) erased a three-run deficit and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians (7-6) on Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field.
The game started with chaos, which resulted in manager Aaron Boone getting ejected. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor hit a shallow fly ball to Yankees’ center fielder Aaron Hicks, who made what looked like a sliding catch and then got up and fired it to second to complete an inning-ending double play. However, after the players ran off the field and everyone watched the replay on the jumbotron, the umpires gathered to talk about it and allowed Cleveland to challenge the play well after the new 15-second rule. The challenge was successful, and the Guardians were rewarded with a run and later scored another.
The Yankees were trailing 3-0 until the fifth inning when Kyle Higashioka put them on the board with an RBI single and another run scored on the same play after the second base umpire got drilled in the face by the throw into the infield.
Franchy Cordero, who has been red-hot at the plate, crushed a game-tying home run in the seventh inning. It was his fourth home run of the season and his team-leading 11th RBI.
Oswaldo Cabrera delivered the biggest hit of the game in the ninth inning when he belted one off the right-field wall for a go-ahead RBI single to make it 4-3, Yankees. However, the Guardians did not go away quietly as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but Clay Holmes got out of the jam to secure his fourth save.
Clarke Schmidt made his third start of the season and surrendered three runs on six hits over four innings while walking one and striking out three. Ron Marinaccio, Michael King, and Wandy Peralta recorded scoreless outings.
