The New York Yankees (62-68) suffered another series loss to the Tampa Bay Rays (80-52) after dropping their eight-straight rubber match by a score of 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field.
New York fell into an early 2-0 hole but battled back and scored two in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Yankees bullpen combined to give up four runs in the sixth and another in the eighth, and the offense went silent the rest of the way.
Kyle Higashioka (9 and DJ LeMahieu (12) smacked back-to-back home runs to tie the game before Anthony Volpe (18) belted a go-ahead two-run shot. Aside from the three homers, New York managed just one hit.
Carlos Rodón allowed two first-inning runs but then settled in, retiring 13 of the final 15 batters he faced while striking out seven. Ian Hamilton was charged with four of the five runs allowed by the bullpen.
Two benches-clearing incidents occurred late in the game after Albert Abreu drilled Randy Arozarena, but nobody was ejected.
The Yankees will head to Detroit to begin a three-game series with the Tigers on Monday at 6:40 p.m.
