Pitchers and catchers reported to spring training on Wednesday morning, and shortly after, Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke to the media and provided updates on injured players.
Boone revealed that right-handed reliever Scott Effross, who missed the 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, had back surgery in December and won’t be ready for game action until summertime.
In addition to that, catcher Jose Trevino strained his calf a few weeks ago and won’t play in spring training games for the first couple of weeks. However, Boone said he expects him to be ready for Opening Day.
With Effross out until this summer, a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen is now available. Candidates include arms with big-league experience like Ron Marinaccio, Cody Poteet, Cody Morris, and Nick Ramirez, and prospects like Will Warren, Clayton Beeter, and Yoendrys Gómez.
New York’s 34-game spring training slate begins Saturday, February 24.
