‘NCIS’ says farewell to David McCallum, longtime Atlantic Beach resident who was wed in Valley Stream

“NCIS” is getting ready to say goodbye to David McCallum. The long-running military police procedural will pay tribute to the Scottish-born actor — and longtime Atlantic Beach resident — who died in September at age 90, in the episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind,” which will air Monday at 9 p.m. on CBS/2.

The network posted a trailer on Instagram for the episode, which will open with Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) delivering the news to the NCIS team that his mentor, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, the medical examiner played by McCallum, has died, The rest of the hourlong drama promises to be an emotional ride for McCallum’s fans as friends mourn Ducky’s death while working on a case that involved him. Also guaranteed to get tear ducts welled up will be a scene where Palmer visits a corgi named Ducky.

McCallum had been a fan favorite on the show and had appeared in all 457 episodes since “NCIS” premiered in 2003. Although McCallum resided in Santa Monica, California, when he was working on the series, he and his wife, Katherine Carpenter, also maintained a home in Atlantic Beach.
The couple, in fact, had strong ties to Long Island. Carpenter, grew up in Cedarhust and was a prominent member of Long Island’s social circle when she and McCallum, then starring in the immensely popular spy series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” met in 1965 at a photo shoot for Glamour. After dating for two years, they were married at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Valley Stream on Sept. 16, 1967. Don Williams, the brother of singer Andy Williams, served as best man, and McCallum’s “U.N.C.L.E.” co-star Robert Vaughn was among the guests.

The Sept. 17, 1967, edition of Newsday featured photos of the new bride and groom exiting the church as a crowd of more than 2,000 fans of “the Blond Beatle,” as McCallum was nicknamed, lined the street.
