Report: Nets to hire Jordi Fernandez as next head coach

The Nets didn’t take long to find their next coach after the season. The team will hire Kings assistant coach Jordi Fernandez, according to a report late Monday from ESPN.

Fernandez, 41, has been the Kings’ top assistant and associate head coach since he was hired in 2022 by coach Mike Brown. Prior to that, he spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Nuggets.

The Athletic first reported Fernandez as a finalist for the job on Saturday, along with former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer and Suns assistant Kevin Young.

This will be Fernandez’s first NBA head coaching job. He succeeds interim coach Kevin Ollie, who took over when Jacque Vaughn was fired on Feb. 19.

The Nets finished last season 32-50 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

Fernandez, born in Barcelona, Spain, does have prior head coaching experience as the current coach for the Canadian men’s basketball team. He led them to a bronze medal in last year’s FIBA World Cup.
