TOWN OF MONTGOMERY – A standoff with an armed man in a Plains Road, Town of Montgomery residence on Friday ended with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group interceded.
Montgomery Town Police Chief John Hank said they responded to a report of shots fired inside the home with a man acting out and threatening to get a gun.
Four other residents were unable to escape while the suspect, who police did not identify, refused to come out and follow orders.
The sheriff’s unit was able to help the trapped residents escape using ladders. No one was injured.
The suspect continued to refuse to come out and surrender and would not communicate with officers and negotiators on the scene.
Police eventually lobbed pepper spray and tear gas into the house; neither of them were successful. But the sheriff’s special unit gained entry ad attempted to take him into custody.
As he continued to resist, police employed a Taser to take hm into custody.
He was taken to the hospital for physical and psychological evaluation.
He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, five counts of reckless endangerment and menacing.
Several area police, fire and ambulance services assisted at the scene including the Orange County Department of Mental Health.
