Attack on Pearl Harbor remembered in Port Jervis

PORT JERVIS – The devastating attack on American soil 82-years ago was remembered in a solemn ceremony held at Port Jervis’ West End Beach Sunday afternoon.  The annual Pearl Harbor Day remembrance ceremony included prayer, reflection on the losses and sacrifices made at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and expressions of gratitude for those who have defended America’s way of life throughout history.

Tri-State Naval Ship Post #7241 Captain Fabrizzio Morejon addressed the approximately two dozen who attended the ceremony, including elected officials, veterans, police officers, and members of the public.

Morejon stressed the importance of not only honoring those who have made great sacrifices in the past, but others who continue to serve.  He noted the vital need to remind current and future generations to remember and learn from America’s history, and to remain diligent in its defense.

“We want everyone to remember that we live in a free country and have our American rights because of the sacrifices of these men and women in support of life, liberty, freedom, and also our power and unity. That was our message today, and we have to continue to drive this home every year because every generation is only one heartbeat away from forgetting all these things,” Morejon reflected after the ceremony.  “If we don’t encourage each generation to listen to what happened in the past and realize there are a lot of nations that do not support our way of life, that is when we surrender to what our enemies want from us – which is not to be free.”

Morejon noted that Pearl Harbor was the first time America was attacked on its own soil, and 9-11 was only 20 years ago.  Such ceremonies and remembrance of history serve to not only honor past sacrifices, but as a reminder to current and future generations of always present dangers.
