POUGHKEEPSIE – A man who barricaded himself in a home on the City of Poughkeepsie’s southside and threatened to blow the house up, surrendered to police after a nearly hour-long standoff on Friday. The city’s police fire, and EMS personnel were assisted at the South Randolph address by Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The man barricaded himself in his residence after a domestic dispute. Police said the man, they described as emotionally disturbed, indicated he had turned the gas valves on in the residence and was going to blow himself and the house up around 6:30 p.m.
Poughkeepsie firefighters were dispatched to the area for the potential gas emergency and staged at a short distance while crisis intervention techniques were used to diffuse the situation.
While first responders were making contact with the man, Central Hudson workers shut off the gas supply to the house.
The man surrendered to police at approximately 7:30 p.m. and he was transported by EMS to a local hospital for evaluation, according to City of Poughkeepsie Police Captain Rich Wilson.
Utility staffers took readings of the gas levels in the residence and determined that no threat of explosion or fire was present.
