POUGHKEEPSIE – A large chunk of the limestone facade from a Market Street building came crashing to the sidewalk early Wednesday. City of Poughkeepsie firefighters and a Building Department representative responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 14.
The chunk of stone fell from the former Poughkeepsie Savings Bank building, which dates back to the early 1900s, and landed on the sidewalk just in front of the building’s doors. Several smaller pieces spread out on the sidewalk and road surface upon impact.
Overnight, the City of Poughkeepsie firefighters used a ladder truck to remove a few smaller pieces that were at risk of falling from the building, and caution tape was put in place, closing the affected portion of the sidewalk.
A representative from the building’s owner met with building department officials at the site early Wednesday morning to review the damage and develop a plan to stabilize the remaining facade. The sidewalk will remain closed until the building is declared safe.
