Child injured during school hiking trip on Mount Beacon

BEACON – A child suffered serious injuries while hiking on Mount Beacon on Friday as part of an educational field trip with the Beacon City School District.  The 11-year-old child required a rescue effort involving the Beacon Fire Department, Beacon Medic 1, DEC, and others at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The student was located along the Red (Casino) Trail that starts at Howland and Wolcott Avenues and climbs to the Mt. Beacon fire tower.

Rescuers climbed the mountain and made contact with the child who was suffering from injuries to the head, shoulder, and leg.

A medevac helicopter was requested to land at Memorial Park to transport the child to the hospital.

When rescuers brought the child down off the mountain, they were loaded on an ambulance and transported a few blocks to the park where the child was transferred to the helicopter and flown to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
