City works to prevent dangerous flooding

POUGHKEEPSIE – City Mayor Marc Nelson has initiated a project to prevent the hazardous flooding of a well-used crosswalk in Poughkeepsie before he leaves office at the end of the month.  The crosswalk between One Civic Center Plaza and the Financial Parking Deck, which disappears underwater every time it rains, is being reconfigured to put an end to the recurring issue.

“When it rains, the crosswalk is under several inches of water, forcing people to walk into traffic, and in the winter, melting snow re-freezes and creates a several-inch thick slab of ice, preventing users in wheelchairs from navigating the otherwise ADA-compliant crosswalk,” said a New York State employee who works at One Civic Center Plaza.

The problem was brought to the attention of Nelson and his administration earlier this year.  DPW and the city’s engineering department promptly went to work on a solution.  After the plans to re-route the drainage in the area, the project went out to bid, with Sun Up Construction Corp., getting awarded the contract.

Work began on Monday when Sun Up laborers, members of Laborers’ Local 17, and heavy equipment operators began restructuring the crosswalk ramp and initiated milling of the existing crosswalk on Tuesday, December 5.  The work was completed on Friday with the exception of the painting of the crosswalk stripes.
