Drunk driver killed teen in hit-and-run, police say

COCHECTON – State Troopers have arrested a man they say killed a teen in a hit-and-run collision on Route 17B just after midnight Thursday morning in Bethel.  The teen had been operating a dirtbike on the road when he was struck and killed.

State Troopers developed 67-year-old Thomas Piatt of Bethel as the suspect and located him five miles away from the accident site.  He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the felonies of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death and vehicular manslaughter.  Piatt was also charged with misdemeanor DWI, police say because the investigation revealed that he was impaired by alcohol.

According to police, Piatt had been driving a 2014 Dodge Charger when he struck the 17-year-old Cochecton resident who was riding the dirtbike.  Piatt then fled the scene after striking the teen.

The teen was transported to Garnet Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Piatt was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail.  He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Bethel Court on September 5, 2023, at 4:00 p.m.
