Earthquake in New Jersey felt in Hudson Valley

MID-HUDSON – The ground shook and it sounded like a freight trade rumbling through the Mid-Hudson Valley minutes before 9:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York recorded a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that originated in Lebanon, New Jersey.

It was felt in  much of the northeast.

It sounded like a train rumbling through the Town of Wallkill while the ground shook in Warwick and Bethel.

At the Sullivan County Animal Shelter, the dogs began to bark, according to a volunteer worker.

There were no reports of injuries or damage from the incident.

Sullivan County Director of Communications Dan Hust said they “definitely felt a rumble” but no reports of damage. “Our 911 dispatchers have received a number of calls from people wondering what was going on.”

He said it is a “rare reminder that we actually do live above a seismically active region,” he said.
