POUGHKEEPSIE – Former Poughkeepsie Alderwoman Yvonne Flowers stood before a packed house on Tuesday and with a bright smile on her face declared: “It’s officials. I’m the mayor of the City of Poughkeepsie.”
The new mayor pledged to continue the legacy of her family and those she has followed in the former Queen City.
“I stand before you as a proud product of Poughkeepsie. A true Poughkeepsie pioneer. It is our village that has helped me become the person I am today and it will be our village that will help our city thrive. Through our collective efforts together we will help make Poughkeepsie a safer and clean city for all residents,” she said. “It is time for us to diminish the north side-southside divide in our city.”
The new mayor’s priorities will include tackling the housing crisis with creation of housing task force; public safety working with the police, district attorney and community partners; complete the city’s updated master plan and invest in our children.
State Attorney General Tish James attended the ceremony and declared with a smile that Flowers is now “the boss lady.”
James said the entire community must stand with Flowers to fight the opioid crisis and gun violence.
