TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Mike Simon, the Town of Poughkeepsie Highway Superintendent, expects his department to be busy plowing snow this winter. His estimation is based on 22 years of experience with the highway department, before being named to the top spot in October of last year.
Simon took over the reigns from his mentor Marc Pfeifer, who retired after decades of service with the town. Simon began his career with the department he now runs in 2003. He served as the deputy highway superintendent under Pfeifer from 2016 to 2022 when the town leaders named him as Pfeiffer’s replacement.
“I think we’re going to have a busy winter,” he said, noting that the region has experienced a very wet summer and the rain has continued through the fall.
Asked if town residents would experience any changes under his leadership, he offered assurance. The Town of Poughkeepsie has stayed under the tax cap with the 2024 budget, of which approximately $3 million is directed to Simon’s department. “We’ve kept all of the same services; snowplowing, leaf pickup, the transfer station,” he said. “We’re going to continue to supply all of those services without any additional costs to the taxpayer.”
Simon has appointed renowned snow removal expert, Mike Stearns to serve as his deputy. The two, according to Simon, have enjoyed a smooth transition. “Being able to work under Marc for the last 22 years, including the last eight as his deputy, I’ve learned a lot from him. We’re going to keep on rolling with the paving in summer and snowplowing in the winter while continuing to provide the best service possible to the taxpayers.”
