KINGSTON – A community vigil for Israel was conducted Wednesday after sundown at Congregation Emmanuel Kingston as the war with Hamas in Gaza continues after the terrorist group savagely attacked Israelis two weeks ago.
It was the first vigil at the Congregation Emmanuel since Hamas fighters attacked and killed more than a thousand Jews nearly two weeks ago. And Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, a member of the congregation with his wife and children, spoke haltingly about the attack’s impact on the psyche of the congregation and his family.
“It’s always personal, but to be in this space,” he said.
“I want to say we are grieving loss in the face of horrific acts of violence and unspeakable evil committed against our Jewish brothers and sisters in Israel.”
Delgado’s wife and children are Jewish.
Rondavid Gold, president of the Jewish Federation of Ulster County, said the attack is a tragedy for Israel and for those who support the Jewish state in the Middle East.
“There, it’s worst thing since the Holocaust. People killing Jews because they are Jews,” he said. “Here people are horrified about what’s going on there. It makes Jews understand there are people out there who hate us because we are Jews. This is not a political thing. It speaks for itself. It is wonderful people are gathering in support.”
