KINGSTON- The City of Kingston is offering grants to low and moderate-income residents who want to build an accessory dwelling unit on their property.
Grants up to $125,000 are available to residents who earn 100 percent or less of the Ulster County’s area medium income, if they build a detached or attached unit and rent it for 10 years.
Thursday an informational meeting was conducted at the Hudson River Maritime Museum detailing this plan, part of the Ulster County Plus One Home program with RUPCO, to bring more affordable housing to the city.
“We believe accessory dwelling units are one of our solutions to our housing crisis,” said Bartek Starodaj, Kingston’s director of housing initiatives.
This program is expected to make more housing available in the city and possibly help stabilize rents. The program also helps with elder care, so an aging parent could live closer to their adult children.
“It’s about increasing flexibility,” said Starodaj. “If you have an aging parent, and you would rather have them live closer to you, rather than in a nursing home, this an option. If you have a mortgage, an accessory dwelling helps, you pay the mortgage.”
Starodaj said the units fit well into existing neighborhoods well and be as large as 1,000-square-feet detached, with an attached unit as large as 50 percent, in square feet, of the existing residence.
