Dear Editor,
Like many here in our Goshen community, I have been following the union organizing campaign at the Goshen Public Library and Historical Society. I believe it is in our community’s best interest for a prompt resolution that will allow the workers and library leadership to continue to provide the exceptional programs and services which we enjoy so much.
A strong labor management relationship will enhance, not distract, from the success of the library.
As someone who has sat on both sides of the table and someone who has dealt extensively with CSEA while serving in county leadership roles I urge you to voluntarily recognize the union and get started on building a good relationship with the CSEA. In my opinion, given that a supermajority of workers, nearing 90%, have signed cards indicating their support for the union it is not in the library’s best interest to continue allocating funds to drag out the process when the outcome appears certain. The only people who stand to benefit from a protracted campaign are attorneys.
I’ll close by sharing that I have found, in my county roles, that it has been beneficial to foster a good relationship with CSEA. They have resources on the state and national level that they’ve been willing to draw upon to assist the county in times of need. Their international union advocates on the federal level for library funding, as well.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to seeing a resolution that is beneficial to all.
Sincerely,
James D. O’Donnell
