WASHINGTON D.C.- On Thursday evening, President Joe Biden delivered his annual State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress.ย Biden focused his speech on the economy, foreign policy, and reproductive rights.ย He also attacked former President Donald Trump, without naming him directly.
Local Congressional Representatives were quick to offer their reactions to Bidenโs speech.
Republican Mike Lawler (NY-17) said, โTonight President Biden delivered a campaign speech that further divided our country rather than a State of the Union address.ย Instead of offering a sound vision for the future and forge a bipartisan path forward, the President gaslit the nation on his failed economic policies, his disastrous handling of our Southern Border, and a foreign policy that appeases our enemies and undermines our allies.ย At a time of great division and global unrest, the President failed to meet the moment.โ
Democrat Pat Ryan (NY-18) said, โLast night, President Biden laid out a forward-looking, optimistic vision for this country, a vision in stark contrast to the divisive and grievance-filled rhetoric of former President Trump.ย Iโve got two kids โ I want a President who is optimistic, who is thinking about their futures, and who is thinking about a better future for everyone in the Hudson Valley.ย The number one thing I hear from folks is that theyโre working hard, but costs are still too high and wages just arenโt keeping up.ย What stood out most to me is that the President addressed these concerns head on, calling for substantive action to raise wages, lower the cost of living, and finally make the ultra-wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share.โ
