POUGHKEEPSIE – A 30-year-old man with a habit of stealing merchandise from a Town of Poughkeepsie department store was sentenced by Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin to prison for his actions on Wednesday. Over three different days last year, Dominique Hobbs of Poughkeepsie stole more than $10,000 worth of merchandise from the store by loading items into a shopping cart and simply walking out of the store with the cart.
On April 11, 2023, Hobbs walked into Kohl’s on South Road, filled a shopping cart with merchandise, and then walked out of the store with the stolen goods. He was arrested by the Town of Poughkeepsie police on May 11, 2023 and charged with grand larceny.
Following his first “successful” heist, Hobbs returned to Kohl’s on April 27, 2023, and performed the same “grab and roll” crime using the method he presumably thought was the perfect crime. He was arrested in the parking lot by police who were unaware that he was the subject of the first grand larceny.
After being arrested on May 11 for the April 11 theft, Hobbs was back on the street on May 12. To celebrate his freedom, Hobbs proceeded back to his favorite store and repeated the crime for the third time. He was promptly arrested in the parking lot after taking his stuffed shopping cart outside. His failure to once again pay for the merchandise resulted in another felony charge of grand larceny.
He pled guilty to the charges in county court earlier and faced sentencing on Wednesday. When allowed to address the court, he said he is working to be a better person. “I can’t be going around stealing from these people,” he proclaimed, noting that he has a 5-year-old daughter who serves as his reminder to do better.
McLoughlin quickly responded by saying “I’m sorry you keep taking yourself away from her,” before calling Hobbs a “lifelong thief,” as a reference to his previous conviction in Orange County on an attempted robbery charge and…
