Mid-Hudson Bridge reopened; suicide prevented

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Mid-Hudson Bridge has been reopened to traffic as of 5:57 p.m. on Monday.  The span had been closed to traffic at approximately 4:30 p.m. as City of Poughkeepsie police negotiated with a suicidal man who was threatening to jump from the bridge.

The man had driven his girlfriend’s car onto the bridge and exited it while threatening to commit suicide.

Police used crisis intervention techniques and a negotiations specialist, along with information from the girlfriend, to convince the man to be taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The bridge was reopened to traffic at 5:57 p.m., according to the City of Poughkeepsie Police.
