New Putnam County fire training center proposed

CARMEL – Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne Wednesday proposed development of a new county fire training center to replace the old facilities in Carmel.

The $1.3 million project would “play a pivotal role” in the training of volunteer firefighters, said Byrne.

“The fire tower, where first responders would traditionally go up and down to train has not been utilized for over a decade due to safety concerns. The burn building itself has been in and out of service intermittently because the county has nickeled and dimed through over the last several years putting $50,000, $100,000 to bring it in to a level where it could be utilized,” he said.

Byrne expects to receive county legislature approval for the funding, most of which will come from the American Rescue Plan. Pending approvals, the project would be completed by the summer of 2024.
