POUGHKEEPSIE – Police are searching for a man who they say assaulted a City of Poughkeepsie parking enforcement officer on Monday. The incident occurred near the intersection of Main and Academy Streets around noon on November 27. The officer required treatment at a local hospital after the ambush.
Two parking enforcement officers were in a marked city vehicle when they asked a man not to double-park his vehicle on Academy Street. The man, described as possibly Hispanic in his late 20s and operating a white Honda sedan, became verbally aggressive toward the officers. Without provocation, the man allegedly ran up to the car and punched the officer who was in in the driver seat, in the face, causing immediate facial injuries. The unidentified man returned to his vehicle and drove away.
City of Poughkeepsie police officers responded to the area while the enforcement officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of bruising, swelling, and lacerations to his face.
The section of Academy Street between Cannon and Main Streets has become very congested due to a high volume of people parking in the southbound lane, exiting the vehicles, and going across the street to the cannabis store at 13 Academy Street. There is a parking lane on the east side of Academy Street that has also become congested with northbound vehicles double-parking to visit the curbside dispensary.
The owner of the store has told visitors and the police that he is a licensed marijuana retailer. When pressed for additional information, he refused to cooperate with law enforcement. A search of the New York State Office of Cannabis Management database does not list any licensed dispensaries in Poughkeepsie.
The police canvassed several of the area businesses on Monday afternoon to view security camera footage to get the license plate number of the assailant’s Honda sedan and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police…
