PORT JERVIS – A large, perfectly shaped, blue spruce tree on the Sussex Street side entrance of City Hall was the star of a Saturday evening event in Port Jervis.
The tall, stately tree was lit with holiday colors to kick off the local holiday season, to the delight of children – and adults – of all ages.
The city’s official Holiday Tree Lighting event was sponsored by Port Jervis Tourism Board, which encourages all to support local businesses and shop locally.
The event included music, refreshments, and holiday fun for all who attended. It was the second year the event was held at this location.
The evening began with an instrumental performance of lively holiday songs by the Broome Street Band. Stationed on the front lawn of City Hall, band members formed a circle and used stand lights and their own holiday lighting decorations to see their holiday music sheets.
As the band played, hot chocolate and cookies were served by the Port Jervis’ Salvation Army.
Mayor Kelly Decker welcomed those in attendance and counted down the lighting of the tree.
And then, via fire department escort, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived for tree-side visits with dozens of youngsters.
Candy canes and small gifts were distributed to children as they shared their holiday wishes with the jolly couple, posing for family keepsake photos.
“And what would you like for Christmas,” each young participant was asked.
While many asked for modern electronic items, quite a few had vintage gift requests.
“I’d like a scarf to match my gloves and hat.”
“A bike.”
“Maybe, a gymnastics mat – or skates?”
The line to visit Santa formed beside the newly lit tree, moving steadily along as children visited and were photographed by family and friends.
