POUGHKEEPSIE – Mayor Yvonne Flowers attended President Biden’s State of the Union Address on Thursday and returned home on Friday. The first-term mayor was a guest of Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18) at the Washington DA speech.
“As a Mayor of a city that is facing many challenges, I left President Biden’s State of the Union feeling hopeful and inspired,” Flowers told Mid-Hudson News Friday night. “President Biden walked into the House chamber with a self-confident attitude that he will deliver a powerful speech and that is exactly what he did!”
Being honored with the opportunity to attend the annual speech given by the leader of the free world is an experience that most will never receive and Flowers was cognizant of the honor while listening to President Biden touch on issues facing many Americans. Flowers was also pleased to hear President Biden address an issue that directly affects Poughkeepsie and one she has been working on since serving as a city councilwoman; the lack of affordable housing.
“The Democrats showed an overwhelmingly positive response as President Biden shared his vision on how he plans to help families with affordable housing, lower federal taxes, lower prescription costs, and working to protect women’s rights in health care.”
Another issue facing many cities across the country involves outdated infrastructure and Biden shined a light on that as well. “I was excited that the President will continue to provide funding to help municipalities replace lead service lines and improve their water and sewer infrastructure.” Flowers and the common council have been struggling to find funding to rectify the problems.
